LAS VEGAS — Nevada State Democratic Party Chair Judith Whitmer released the following statement following the federal declaration of a tier-1 water shortage on the Colorado River.
“Climate change is an emergency. This is a fact,” said Chair Whitmer. “The IPCC report that came out this week was bleak, but it didn’t tell us anything that we can’t see with our own eyes right here in Nevada. Lake Mead is drying up. The Colorado River is drying up. The robust ecosystem of the Mojave is dying right in front of us, and the lives and livelihoods of millions of Nevadans are on the front lines of this crisis.
“We can’t equivocate any longer. While it is crucial that we all do our part to preserve water in our homes and businesses, that will never be enough: we need massive structural changes in the way we do things, and we need them quickly. Rep. Dina Titus has already signed on to co-sponsor the THRIVE Act and we urge the rest of our congressional delegation to join her. Now is the time for action and we hope our fellow Democrats will treat the moment with the urgency it deserves.”
