The Intersection of Religion & Politics

As we get ready to celebrate Independence Day, it’s perhaps more than appropriate to focus attention on one of the greatest threats to the liberties we commemorate that day. Religious freedom has emerged as one of the most contentious issues in American politics today. Despite being guaranteed by the First Amendment, many extremist evangelicals continue to challenge and distort this Constitutional concept beyond reason, as does the conservative-leaning Supreme Court. Will the constitutionally-mandated separation of church and state end up in the dustpan of our crumbling democracy? How and why are these things happening? What, if anything, can be done? Join us for a compelling discussion on this very important, controversial and timely issue, led by guest speaker Greg Bentall, WashoeDEMS Treasurer and a former pastor. He will discuss topics such as:
  • Freedom of religion under the Constitution (I believe that freedom OF religion begins with freedom FROM religion).
  • Regulations on Church involvement in politics (which are now totally ignored).
  • How did we get into the current culture wars?
  • Why are evangelicals so entranced with Donald Trump?
  • Why is Diversity/Equality/Inclusiveness such a threat?
  • The threat of “Dominion Theology.”
  • How religion can foster extremism.
  • Why evangelicals got abortion totally wrong from a biblical perspective.

Pease join us at 5:30 PM on July 1st for social time and refreshments. The meeting portion of our program will begin at 6 PM.

Q&A Session will follow the presentation, and questions can be submitted in advance by emailing:
