Our Place LogoMonthly Lunch for the Women's Shelter at 'Our Place'
Next Lunch Served on August 8, 2021

Bagged LunchWe are happy to revive one of our long-running community service projects: feeding homeless. You may remember that we stopped the monthly lunch program at 'Record Street', the shelter run at the Reno Assistance Center, when the serving location moved and the rules changed. We will now be contributing bagged 'To-go' lunches for around 100 women in the new Washoe County Women's Shelter at Our Place. Our Place is the "outcome-based campus designed to create a safe and stable environment for women and families who are experiencing homelessness". We will provide lunches on the second Sunday of the month. Each bagged lunch will consist of a protein sandwich, fruit, sweet treat and bottled water. Because of COVID-19, we will not be doing a distribution line as we did at Record Street. All the bags will be be assembled before delivery to Our Place.

As with Record Street, Debbie Kladney is kindly coordinating the monthly lunches. Our next monthly lunch will be on August 8th. If you are interested in helping or have questions, please contact Debbie at debbiekladney@gmail.com.

RTC Bus Passes for Community Organizations

RTC Logo

The South Washoe DEMS donates RTC Bus Passes to various community organization such as the Reno Community Assistance Center,The Eddy House and the Northern Nevada International Center! One way we can help these organizations is to provide RTC Bus Passes. Staff can then distribute these on an "as needed" basis to help clients when they go on a job interview, a medical appointment, etc.

We kicked this project off at our 2012 Holiday Party and have continued the project into the future. Through November 2019, we have donated 304 single ride passes plus 841 Day Passes (formerly called 24 Hour passes) to the

The organizations need the adult Day Pass that cost $9.00 for 3 passes ($3.00/pass). Bus Passes may be purchased in four ways:

  1. Online at the RTC websiteOpen in a New Window, using a VISA or MasterCard – (No Username or Password Required)

  2. In person at any of the RTC pass outlet locations The list of locations maybe found in the RTC "Bus Book", on pages 10-11. (Click here for a link to the "Bus Book"Open in a New Window)

  3. Buy them from our Treasurer at any regular meeting (Check payable personally to the treasurer, not to South Washoe DEMS)

Going forward, we plan to continue this project into the future. Any Bus Passes you purchase yourself, bring them to any South Washoe DEMS meeting or call us (775-800-1486) and we will arrange to pick them up from you. Thank you for your continued support!

Clothing Drive

SocksIn January 2013, we learned from the Reno Community Assistance Center staff of the important need their clients have for clothing. Our Steering Committee then decided we would like to help so we donated $100.00 from our treasury and bought warm socks. These were passed out during our January, 2013 lunch serving and were very well received and appreciated.

Since then, we have continued to collect socks and underwear to hand out while we serve lunch during the fall and winter months. Begining in late 2017, after having representatives from The Eddy House speak to us about their program and needs, we started to collect clothing for them as well.

The Eddy House is particularily in need of socks, underwear and bras for homeless, runaway, foster and other at-risk youth (ages 12-24). 70% of these youth are male. Their 'Wish List' includes:

  • Women's Low-Rise Underwear (XS-XL)
  • Sports Bras All Sizes
  • Hanes T-Shirts Black (SM-2XL)
  • Boxer Brief Men's (SM-2XL)

The socks may also be donated at any South Washoe DEMS event.

Our KTMB Sign on Wedge ParkwaySWD Clean-Up CrewKTMB - Wedge Parkway Clean-Up

In conjunction with Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful (ktmb.orgOpen in a New Window), the South Washoe DEMS have adopted Wedge Parkway - between Arrowcreek Parkway and the Mt. Rose Highway. Look for our sign as you travel south just before the library. At least 3 times per year, we clean up debris on this stretch of road.

Our South Washoe DEMS/KTMB coordinator, Berry Cernoch, is doing a great job heading up this project.

Our next Clean-Up date will be announced later this year. We meet at the South Valleys Library. Safety vests, disposable gloves, garbage bags and the "picker upper" tools will be provided. Adherence to COVID-19 safety precautions will be mandatory: volunteers need to bring their own masks and hand sanitizer, and they will be socially distanced while working. To join the "Litter Patrol" or for more information, please email Barry Chernoch.
